Linear Algebra, MAT 330, Fall 2006
This is the home page and first day handout for MAT 330, meeting MW
from 10:00 -- 11:15 in CBC-C316. My name is Dr. Arthur
Baragar, my office is CBC-B 308 and I can be reached at 895-0378.

The prerequisite for this course is MAT 182.

Syllabus: The main goal of this course will be to learn how to
diagonalize matrices. To do so, we will have to learn about matrices
and why we use them, how to solve systems of linear equaitons, how to take
determinants, how to invert matrices, how to identify uninvertible matrices
and find their null space, and how to change bases. We will also learn
about general vector spaces, linear transformations, inner products, and
some applications of linear algebra. We will cover most of Chapters
1 -- 8.
Grading Scheme: This is the grading scheme for this course:
- Homework: 10%.
- Quizzes: 9%.
- Exam one, Wednesday, October 4th: 17%.
- Exam two, Wednesday, November 1st: 17%.
- Exam three, Wednesday, November 29th: 17%.
- Final, Monday, December 11th, 10:10am -- 12:10pm: 30%.
There will be three unannounced quizzes, each worth 3%. There is
no preset corelation between numerical grades and letter grades. A
letter grade (without + or -) will be included with the return of each exam
and will cover all exams up to then. Current grades will be posted
on WebCampus after every exam.
Office Hours: If you need to see me, please look for me during
the office hours posted below, or please make an appointment. If there is
no one in my office during the last half-hour of the office hour, I will
feel free to leave, so please arrive early. Office hours begin the second
week of classes.
- Monday and Wednesday, 11:20 am -- noon, 2:00pm -- 3:50pm,

- August 28: Instruction and late registration begin.
- September 1: Final date for late registration, course additions,
changes, or fee payment (with late penalty). Last day to inform
me of absences due to religious holidays. Last day to drop a course
without it showing up on transcripts.
- September 4: Labor Day recess.
- October 27: Nevada Day recess (Friday).
- November 3: Final date to drop or withdraw from classes (except
short courses). A grade of "W" will
show on transcripts.
- November 10: Veterans' Day recess (Friday).
- November 23: Thanksgiving.
- December 4 -- 8: Study Week.
- December 11 --15: Final examinations.
