Nevada Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research

TRAVEL GRANTS

The Nevada System of Higher Education has received funding from the National Science Foundation for the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (NSF EPSCoR) to promote and support participation of undergraduates, graduates, post docs, and junior faculty members to strengthen and broaden research experiences related to those areas normally funded by the National Science Foundation.  Currently, there are funds available to support the travel expenses for NSHE students and junior faculty to attend and participate in science meetings and conferences.

Request for travel assistance must come from junior faculty (non-tenured or less than five years) on behalf of their student(s) or themselves.  The Nevada NSF EPSCoR award is offering this travel support to selected undergraduate and graduate students to attend national scientific conferences with their faculty advisors.  To encourage and support the development of presentation skills, preference will be given to faculty and students making presentations at these meetings.  An important benefit for students attending professional meetings is the forum provided to develop networking opportunities.

Available funding per person is a maximum of $1,200.  It is possible, under certain circumstances, that travel funds may also be used to defray the travel costs of groups of students wishing to attend regional environmental meetings.

The Letter of Request from the faculty advisor must include:

  • Faculty and student name(s) and Institutional affiliation

  • Research interests of the faculty advisor and the student

  • Travel destination and dates of travel

  • Name of the conference, program, or meeting and contact person(s)

  • A brief description of the purpose of the visit and its value to the applicant

  • Poster or presentation title

  • Amount requested detailing costs of travel

There are no deadlines for submitting requests; however, all travel must occur before June 1, 2008.  The Nevada NSF Project Director will continually review applications and announce decisions through the Nevada EPSCoR Office.

This offer of assistance will continue until all available funds have been obligated.  Questions or applications with necessary information and supporting materials should be addressed to Alice Ward in the Nevada EPSCoR Office alice_ward@nshe.nevada.edu.
