Nevada Summer Scholarships

The Nevada System of Higher Education announces a program to promote undergraduate research. Eligible students must be undergraduates either majoring in mathematics, science, or engineering, or majoring in education and specializing in teaching K-12 in the fields of mathematics, science, or technology. Students must be enrolled at one of the NSHE institutions: UNLV, UNR, NSC, CSN, GBC, TMCC, WNC, or the Sierra Nevada College. Research will be conducted under the guidance of a faculty research mentor at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR), the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), or the Desert Research Institute (DRI). The program is supported by funding from the National Science Foundation’s Experimental Program for the Stimulation of Competitive Research (NSF EPSCoR).

Proposal Preparation and Submission Instructions
General Instructions:

All required documents must be combined into a single PDF file and emailed to nshe-spo@nevada.edu.  In the "subject" line of the email submission, enter:

EPSCoR Academic: [last name, first name initial]
For example, when Tom Rodriguez submits his proposal, in the e-mail subject line he would type:”EPSCoR Academic: Rodriguez, t”.

Format restrictions:

  • One inch margins
  • Single spaced
  • Font – Arial 11 or larger

 

Required Documents:

1.  Cover Page: (Click here to download)
A completed and signed cover page, scanned into PDF will be the first page of the proposal. (please fill out this pdf form, sign where signatures are required, then scan document as a PDF and send it with the rest of the pdf packet)

 

2.  Project Description (limited to 2 pages):

    1. The project description must consist of...
    2. Abstract (60-70 words),
    3. Introduction,
    4. Objectives,
    5. Plans for research,
    6. Timetable, and
    7. Plans for dissemination of results.

The proposal must be understandable to reviewers outside student's major field of study.

3.  Personal Statement (one page):

  1. Describe your ...
  2. Academic background,
  3. Scientific interests,
  4. Any past research experience, and
  5. What you hope to gain from the research experience.
     

4.  Support Letter (one page):
Provide a letter of endorsement from the supervising faculty mentor that describes her/his level of involvement in the project.  Scan the letter and include in the proposal.  Please notify Alice Ward if the faculty mentor chooses to send the letter of endorsement directly to Alice Ward at alice_ward@nshe.nevada.edu, or your file may be considered incomplete.

5.  Transcripts:
Scanned official transcripts are preferred, but a scanned “unofficial” copy, downloaded from your University’s website as a pdf document, will be accepted.

6.  References/Citations:
Literature references and citations may be included and will not count toward the two (2) page limit for the project description.
Reminder: You must identify a faculty member with whom you would be doing research.  Refer to http://www.nevada.edu/epscor/mentor.html for a list of faculty members who have volunteered to be mentors. This is NOT an updated or complete list of potential mentors. Other potential mentors at Nevada’s research institutions may be identified through each institution’s web page: University of Nevada Las Vegas; Desert Research Institute; University of Nevada Reno
