UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM 2008

NSF EPSCoR

Nevada Summer Scholarships

The Nevada System of Higher Education announces a program to promote undergraduate research. Eligible students must be undergraduates either majoring in mathematics, science, or engineering, or majoring in education and specializing in teaching K-12 in the fields of mathematics, science, or technology. Students must be enrolled at one of the NSHE institutions: UNLV, UNR, NSC, CSN, GBC, TMCC, WNC, or the Sierra Nevada College. Research will be conducted under the guidance of a faculty research mentor at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR), the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), or the Desert Research Institute (DRI). IMPORTANT:  Applications and all application material including 1-4 below must be received ELECTRONICALLY by Alice Ward by March 3, 2008.

***Please note that only completed files will be reviewed.

REQUIRED FORMAT:

To submit your application materials, you MUST follow this format:  In the "subject" line of your email, put your last name and first name initial, underscore, the acronym "UROP", underscore, and the type of document you are sending. So for instance, when Tom Rodriguez submits his transcripts, in the e-mail subject line he would type: (rodriguez t_UROP_transcript).

Sending these materials in ONE email will reduce the chance that an application file will be incomplete at the time of the review process, in which case if Tom Rodriguez was to send his Statement, Work Experience, and Transcripts as attachments to one e-mail, the e-mail subject line for Tom Rodriquez could read: (rodriguez t_UROP_stmnt_project_transcripts).

  1. PERSONAL STATEMENT: (not to exceed one page) Font type (size) should be Arial (10 points or larger) or Times (11 points or larger). Please describe a) your academic background, b) scientific interests, c) any past research experience, d) what you hope to gain from the research experience.

  2. PROJECT: (two pages) Font type (size) should be Arial (10 points or larger) or Times (11 points or larger). Start with a title for your project. The student should create a brief research proposal that must be endorsed by the faculty mentor. The proposal should be a concise statement including a clear objective and research plan.

  3. REFERENCES: Two letters of reference (a third is optional) emailed directly from the letter's author. One letter must be from your mentor indicating his/her willingness to advise you. The other reference(s) should be from someone aware of your science, math, and/or engineering interests and skills (e.g., a professor from one of your classes.)

  4. TRANSCRIPTS: Official transcripts or computer generated transcripts must also be received by March 5, 2007. We do not accept Xeroxed or faxed copies for legibility reasons. If your current institution does not allow you to download a PDF file of your unofficial transcripts that you can attach to an email, we will accept official hard-copies that are hand delivered or mailed to Ms. Alice Ward, Nevada EPSCoR Office, 755 E. Flamingo Las Vegas, NV 89119-7363. If you plan to provide a hard-copy original, it is suggested that you make your request to the Registrar’s Office 2-3 weeks early. In the past, students have waited until the last minute and missed our deadline.

Please send documents as PDF files.

E-MAIL all documents to Ms. Alice Ward at: nshe-spo@nevada.edu

Reminder: You must identify a faculty member with whom you would be interested in working. Refer to http://www.nevada.edu/epscor/mentor.html for a list of faculty members who have volunteered to be mentors. This is not a complete list of potential mentors. Other potential mentors at Nevada’s research institutions may be identified through each institution’s web page: University of Nevada Las Vegas; Desert Research Institute; or University of Nevada Reno.

ONLY when you believe that ALL of your application material has been received by our office, send an e-mail to request confirmation that your application is complete. Use the following format in the subject line below:

For example: (rodriguez t_UROP_complete)

Please e-mail this request to the System Sponsored Projects Office at: nshe-spo@nevada.edu. Your request for confirmation should include a list of materials that you have submitted and the names of faculty member(s) of whom you have requested letters of recommendation.

If you have any questions about this process, please email your questions to Ms. Ward at: alicew@nevada.edu
