All EPSCoR programs in Nevada have been successful in helping build infrastructure within the state, recruiting some of the best and brightest faculty to the NSHE research institutions, and increasing the student population and capabilities in science and technology. Nevada has increased efforts for competitive research capabilities through other EPSCoR agencies, such as, National Aeronautical and Space Agency (NASA), Department of Energy (DOE), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Defense (DOD).
Nevada has recently developed the EPSCoR Advisory Board to promote Research, Science and Technology. The Advisory Board is made up of industrial partners, legislative council, university faculty, former federal employees and members of the community. The committee is knowledgeable about the crucial nature of developing research, science and technology within the three research institutions in Nevada, which are, University of Nevada, Reno, University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Desert Research Institute. The EPSCoR board is also determined to enhance the training in the state colleges to prepare the students for matriculation into the research institutions and develop their skill levels into an economy which has clean, high-paying, technology-based companies leading economic diversity.
Brief History of Program:
The Department of Energy's (DOE) EPSCoR is a federal-state partnership program designed to help the Department lead the world in meeting today's and tomorrow's energy needs through increased competition in energy-related research and development across the entire nation. The mission of DOE EPSCoR is to support basic research activities spanning the broad range of science and technology programs within DOE, and to increase the number of scientists and engineers in energy-related areas.
Nevada received its first award from DOE EPSCoR in 1993. In 1994, a cooperative agreement for research was awarded, and in 2000, a third cooperative agreement was awarded fro research in radiography. The NSHE has received more than $8 million from DOE EPSCoR to date.
Currently Funded Programs:
Currently, NSHE administers one DOE EPSCoR award.
Current DOE Solicitations:
None at this time.
