National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

Brief History of Program:

NASANASA's mission is to pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research. In achieving their mission, NASA depends upon the private sector -- industry, educational institutions and other nonprofit organizations -- for the greater part of its research needs. Therefore, NASA encourages the submission of unique and innovative unsolicited proposals which will further the Agency's mission.

Nevada began work with a NASA EPSCoR planning grant in 1999. To date, Nevada has received more than $5 million from NASA EPSCoR.

Currently Funded Programs:

Currently NSHE administers two NASA EPSCoR awards.

  • Exploring Planetary Surfaces: Earth, Moon, and Mars - This program combines existing strengths of NSHE researchers in the fields of geomorphology, geology, biology, remote sensing and computer visualization in order to enhance NASA's endeavors of returning humans to the surface of the moon and provide a continuous robotic presence at Mars. This will be done through the development of a comprehensive database and immersion visualization program for two planetary analog sites in Nevada and California.
  • Nevada Astrophysics - Theoretical and laboratory astrophysicists address several astrophysical problems of direct interest to NASA and to advance to advance scientific knowledge of the origin of the solar system and of the origin and structure formation of the universe (3C and #D respectively).
