Space Grant

Brief History of Program:

Through Space Grant programs the NSHE system promotes public outreach and K-12 education activities through coordinated activities at local schools, museums and planetariums.

Nevada Space GrantThe Nevada Space Grant Consortium (NvSGC) works to expand opportunities for Americans to understand and participate in NASA's aeronautics and space programs by supporting and enhancing science and engineering education, research and outreach programs. Since the inception of the program, NASA has provided the NvSGC with $3,446,188 in funding which was matched with $1,470,513 by the State. On average, 35% of the annual funds go toward scholarships and fellowships; 42% is allocated to support faculty research, student projects and outreach programs, and the remaining 23% goes to consortium management. All Nevada Space Grant funds are awarded through a statewide competitive process.

Currently Funded Programs:

Currently, NSHE administers one Space Grant award.

  • Nevada Space Grant Consortium - Targets hands-on workforce training and research in the strategic areas of astrobiology, astrophysics, planetary geology and geophysics, and engineering. Established SMART goals and objectives enhance the ability of the consortium to ensure program success and address the following areas:
  1. increase participation by underrepresented groups;
  2. develop the capacities of Nevada students and faculty to participate in or host competitions;
  3. establish formal mentoring and student recognition programs;
  4. formalize industrial partnering relationships to increase opportunities for internships, externships and student interactions with industry;
  5. increase the number of applicants for internships and academy positions at NASA centers;
  6. establish new courses within the NSHE institution's curricula; and
  7. continue to increase the number and quality of applicants for fellowships and scholarships.
