Nevada Research Network Meeting January 23, 2001 Attending: Joe Lombardo, Ed Anderson, Sally Phares, Lori Temple, Lyle Pritchett, Lisa Zumpft, Teresa Coffman For the CISE personnel report, Ed Anderson asked what he should do about people who were no longer there. Lisa Zumpft said their supervisor can sign for them. A copy goes to accounting and a copy goes to Jerry Best. Sally Phares added that Glenda will want us to keep a copy, too. Lori Temple asked Lisa Zumpft if she received everything she needed to close out the EPSCoR Grant, and Lisa replied that she would check. Ed Anderson reported that we would have enhancement money starting July 1, for a CENIC connection. The grant money, however, goes to the end of the year. Status report on the Internet2 connections:
Lyle Pritchett asked if the backup DS3 was ready, and Ed Anderson replied that it should be ready any day. Ed said he would mention putting in the DRI-to-DRI PVC to Alan. Ed Anderson passed along a proposal from CENIC. They are doing outreach to K-12 students in California, and need to get connectivity to the California schools in the Tahoe Basin. If we would allow some traffic to go over our connection, they would be willing to pay $20,000 to $30,000 for it. The payment might offset our connection fees. Lyle Pritchett suggested that we could slant it as Nevada maneuvering to make a good stretch to our Federal money, so long as we didn't promise to NSF that the connectivity would be for research only. No one felt that we would use up all our bandwidth right at first, and Ed Anderson said we would spend our federal money first. Lisa Zumpft said that we only have to ask our Program Manager's okay, if any issues come up. The general feeling was that it would be a "good neighborly" thing to do. Teresa Coffman outlined an opportunity for Nevada researchers which Dan VanBelleghem gave us, where anyone with remote sensing needs could volunteer to be part of a demonstration study done by ADEC, a research consortium centered at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Sally Phares talked about a grant proposal due to NSF on Feb 15, which would provide a test bed which could lead to the expansion of our current network. Sally wanted the NRN group to continue to meet, despite the current lull, in order to discuss grant work. Ed Anderson suggested thinking about how to connect to Utah, since we have dark fiber going there. The next meeting was scheduled for some time after 3:00 PM on March 15. |
