Nevada Research Network Meeting February 1, 2002

Attending: Lyle Pritchett, Steve Zink, Ed Anderson, Lori Temple, Lisa Zumpft, Teresa Coffman

The meeting began at 3:40.

Steve Zink told everyone that KNPB, channel 5 in Reno, wants to apply for funding for Internet2 interconnectivity to bring programming in from Idaho and up to a satellite. The programming is of Regional Economics in the Intermountain West. It would not be real-time, nor prime-time. He expects more information via e-mail soon. Ed Anderson asked if there are restrictions on content over Internet2, and Steve Zink replied there were none from Abilene. We'll keep this item on the agenda for the next meeting.

Steve Zink reported on the Maui WEPSCoR meeting. He said three people from Nevada were there: himself, Yaakov Varol, and Vanda Grubisic. Lisa Zumpft added that Darrell Pepper was there, as well. Steve Zink said that the meeting was largely about curriculum development issues, particularly around bioinformatics. They were discussion creating a shared institute for instruction for the West. He noted that almost every other Western state has an Access Grid room.

Lisa Zumpft asked the group to help her respond to Ed Derrick's requests in preparation for the AAAS review of the UCCSN's Computational Capability. They have been invited to help the UCCSN decide how best to employ the environmental computing funds in the newest NSF EPSCoR proposal. AAAS is coming in late April and we need to have certain information to them before they get here, including:

  1. What infrastructure is available now (computational resources, connectivity, etc.) in the different locations?
  2. Who is operating these resources?
  3. How are the resources and the operating paid for?
  4. How are resources allocated on the campuses for computing resources?

April 1 is the tentative deadline to Lisa Zumpft for a united response to these requests. Lyle Pritchett offered to draft a proposed format using the CTO report plus information about connectivity, physical layout, and security. Steve Zink suggested that Lisa Zumpft ask for clarification about the format of the data from Ed Derrick, and Lori Temple said they would trust Lisa Zumpft's interpretation of what Ed Derrick tells her.

Ed Anderson said that the remaining CISE funds, approx. $221,000, can be fully expended by the end of the award on just the circuit fees of $24,000 a month. He then said that we're buying some foundry equipment which could count as an additional $260,000 toward matching funds. He believed that SCS's expenditures alone would be sufficient to meet the CISE grant's remaining match requirement, so the campuses would not need to contribute any.

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 14, 2002 from 3:30 to 5:00.
