G. WATER CONSERVATION PRACTICES FOR AGRICULTURE PRODUCERS

The project will determine the most economically effective use of water on agricultural lands and provide producers with an estimate of the potential amount of water rights they may be able to offer to the market for lease or sale.

May 2007:

This project is well underway. The survey of agricultural landowners in the Walker Basin is completed and will be sent out in June 2007.  We look forward to landowner response and interest in this project.

June 2007:

This project is moving forward smoothly. The majority of secondary data has been collected and primary data is currently in collection.

Highlight of the month
The survey of agricultural landowners in the Walker Basin was sent out and posted to the internet in June 2007. We look forward to landowner response and interest in this project.

July 2007:

The survey of agricultural landowners in the Walker Basin was completed and returned by 68 landowners.

August 2007:

Preliminary results from the agricultural landowner survey show that 5.7 percent of the respondents would be willing to sell all or a portion of their water rights; 21.4 percent would be willing to lease all or a portion of their water rights; 45.7 percent would be wiling to implement water conserving crops; and 45.8 percent would be willing to use water conserving irrigation strategies. 

Highlight of the month
The model the team will use for results analysis is under construction and data is being input to the model.

September 2007:

Analysis of the agricultural producer surveys is underway.  The model we will use for the analysis of results is under construction and data is being input to the model.

October 2007:

Enterprise budgets for current crops have been completed.  Project Co-PI’s, Kynda Curtis and Staci Emm, presented an overview of the study to 40 attendees at the Walker Lake Festival in Hawthorne on Wednesday Oct. 17.  Attendees were enthusiastic and inquisitive regarding the study and potential use of the results.

November 2007:

Progress continues for this project with results of the agricultural producer survey to appear in Cattlemen’s Update proceedings in January. Cattlemen’s Update will be held in various locations across Nevada in January 2008.

December 2007:

All data collected and analyzed has been converted to new version of software and is now available for use by all project researchers.
