Update, 11/7/05: I
have committed almost all of the funds from the NSA grant (supporting
about a dozen people). I have enough funds for one more
person. Thereafter, I might have enough funds to offer partial
support, or I can put people on a waiting list, in case anybody decides
they cannot come. I still have uncommitted funds from the
NTF.
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that we again have funding for the West
Coast Number Theory Conference. With these funds, we can support
graduate students, post docs, and junior faculty (usually interpreted
as an assistant professor without tenure) who do not have other means
of support. Our funds are from the National Security
Agency (about $10,000) and the Number Theory Foundation
($1000). The funds from the NSA are available to US
citizens and permanent residents only. The funds from the NTF
will go to those who cannot be funded by the NSA grant.
If you know of any graduate students or young professors (possibly
yourself?) who you think would benefit from attending this conference,
and who qualify for funding, please let them know about this
opportunity.
To be funded, please have the person write directly to me (if the
person is a student of yours, sending me an endorsement on their behalf
will also be useful -- a sentence will suffice). I'll want to
know their citizenship / residency (i.e., whether they qualify for the
NSA funding), their current student/employment status, and their
institutional affiliation. The name of their advisor would also
be appreciated. Encourage them to write earlier rather than
later. I plan to make the first round of offers of support on
October 17th, and the second on October 31st. Subsequent
deadlines will be announced here, depending on how much funds are
already committed.
Priority will be given to graduate students, then post docs,
followed by junior faculty in tenure-track positions.
Under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to attend.
Last year, we were able to provide some
level of support to 17 people using the NSA grant, and 3 people using
the NTF grant (that's about 25% of the participants). Las Vegas
was cheap, though, so we probably won't be able to support as many this
year. Please help me get the word out.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
-Arthur Baragar (mailto:wcnt@unlv.nevada.edu)
