Elementary Calculus I, MATH 181, Summer II, 2009

This is the home page and first day handout for MATH 181, section 007, meeting MTWRF from 11:20 – 1:20 in BEH 105. My name is Dr. Arthur Baragar. My office is CDC-1016 and I can be reached at 895-0378.

Chapter 1: Functions and Limits.
Chapter 2: Derivatives.
Chapter 3: Inverse Functions.
Chapter 4: Applications of Differentiation.
Chapter 5: Integrals.

Grading Scheme: The grading in this course is as follows:

Homework, 10%.
Quiz 1 (online?), weekend of 6/5 – 6/8: 10%.
Exam 1, Friday, June 12^th: 20%.
Quiz 2 (online?), weekend of 6/19 – 6/22: 10%.
Exam 2, Friday, June 26th: 20%.
Final, Thursday, July 2^nd: 30%. Sample questions. (A selection of questions that have appeared on previous finals.)

There is no preset correlation between numerical grades and your final letter grade. A letter grade (without + or -) will be included with the return of each exam and will cover all exams up to then. Current grades will be posted on WebCampus after every exam.

Office Hours: If you need to see me, please look for me during the office hours posted below, or please make an appointment. If there is no one in my office during the last half of the office hour, I will feel free to leave, so please arrive early.

Daily, 1:30 – 2:30, or by appointment.

Other remarks: I will not be present during Exam 1, and there will be no office hours that day (6/12). I’ll be away all weekend (Disneyland with kids), so Exam 1 will not be graded until 6/16, at the earliest.

Other Important Dates:

May 29 - Last day to register and pay for Session II without a late payment fee.
May 29 - Last day to drop a Session II course and receive a 100 percent refund.
May 29 - Overload petitions for Session II must be on file with the Registrar's Office.
June 1 - Instruction and late registration begins.
June 1-2 - $25 late registration fee for any Session II payments received on these dates.
June 2 - Last day offset policy applies for adding and dropping Session II courses on this date. Go in person to Registrar's Office or Summer Term Office.
June 3 - Students who have neither dropped or paid for Session II courses will be administratively dropped still owing 50 percent.
June 5 - Last day to withdraw a Session II course and receive a 50 percent refund.
June 19 - Last day to withdraw Session II courses. No withdrawals will be allowed after this date.
July 3 - Independence Day recess.
July 3 - Session II ends.
