Conclusion Introduction:
You are an applicant! Sea World of California is currently hiring a new Ocean Animal Educator to travel the country, visit elementary schools, and present information on the killer whale! In order to interview for the position, you must first complete research on the killer whale species and design a presentation which could be used with a group of elementary students. Also, before going to the interview, you must complete tasks 1,2,3,and 4 (described below). Finally, during your personal interview, you will also be asked a question similar to,"If a young student wanted to know how he/she could help protect and help the killer whales of our world. What would you say?" Think about your response as you complete this project. Good Luck!
Task #1: Research
1) You will be assigned to a group of 5 students.
2) Each group member will choose one of the following questions (or groups of questions) to research using the web sites listed under " Student Resources":
What is a killer whale? (Be very specific!)
How do killer whales reproduce, and what is their life expectancy?
Where do killer whales live? What are their migration habits? Describe how they travel (alone or in groups).
What do they eat? How do they hunt? Do they have any predators?
Are there any threats to the killer whale populations of our world?

HOT TIP: Make sure that you are very detailed in your findings. Remember you are in competition for a great job!

Task #3: Interview Presentation
Before you go to your interview, you are required to design and produce a presentationon killer whales. Your presentation must be made with a multimedia/slide show computer program. You may use PowerPoint, Hyperstudio,or any other of your choice, upon approval of the teacher no later than 2 weeks prior to beginning task #3.
In order to be a qualifying candidate, you must follow these requirements!
1) Each slide must have a transition.
2) There must be at least 2 sounds used with any chosen transition.
3) There must be at least 5 graphics used throughout the presentation.
4) Your presentation must include at least 7 slides with the following specifications:
Slide #1: Title of the presentation and your name.
Slide #2: Information to answer research question 1 ("What is a killer whale?")
Slide #3: Your answer to research questions 2 ("How do killer whales reproduce? What is their life expectancy?")
Slide #4: A description of research questions 3 ("Where do killer whales live? What are their migration habits? How do they travel?")
Slide #5: A description of your answer to research questions 4 (What do killer whales eat? How do they hunt? Do killer whales have any predators?)
Slide #6: Information to answer research question 5 (Are there any threats to the killer whale populations of our world? If so, what are they?)
Slide #7: This slide will include information about your professional and educational experiences. You should include a short paragraph explaining why you should be chosen for the job!
HOT TIP: Again, remember that you are in competition for this awesome job which will allow you to travel around the world!
HOT TIP #2: Also keep in mind that this presentation is to be geared toward any elementary students grades K-5!
Good Luck!
Be Creative!
Have Fun Making This Presentation!
Task #4: Proposed School Program
You will have one last group component to complete for the interview. As a group you will decide how you are going to present the program to your elementary students. You will need to include the following items:
A list of materials you will need (for example: costumes, slide projectors, computers, pictures, etc.).
A list of ideas to be included and any teacher information which will be sent to the schools at least 1 month before the program is to come to the school.
An outline of how you will run the program by answering these questions:1) How will you introduce the program? 2) How will you involve the students in the program? 3) What sequence of activities will you follow? 4) How long will the program last? 5) Will the students be given anything to take home from the program? If so, what are your ideas?
Your work will be evaluated in three parts. First, you will get a grade for your individual research and written report. Secondly, you will get a grade for your individual "Interview Presentation". Lastly, you will get a grade for your group work (this includes the "Proposed School Program" as well as your ability to cooperate and work as part of a group.).Evaluation:

Conclusion:
Now that you have completed the research and project, I will ask you again, "If a young student wanted to know how he/she could help protect and help the killer whales of our world. What would you say?"

As a lead into this project, I would suggest that teachers using this WebQuest, complete all or some of the following activities prior to having students begin this quest (this will depend on your own classroom setting as well as the abilities of the students in your classroom and which skills you have previously covered):
Complete a research type project on any other animal, making sure to cover such questions as the students areasked in the research task.
Teach students how to use a presentation tool such as Powerpoint, Hyperstudio, or any other which your school may have.
You may even want to complete your own version of this WebQuest, using a different ocean animal, in order to model the entire process.
Below you will find some web sites which may help in your preparation for the use of this WebQuest:
