I. Outline of the Course

Class Time and Location: Mon-Fri 9:40 a.m. - 11:10 a.m., CBC C-230.

Office Hours: MTu & ThF 2:30pm – 4:00pm, or by appointment.

Textbook: College Algebra by Beecher, Penna and Bittinger, 3rd  Edition, published by Addison-Wesley.

Scope of Course:

This is an introductory college level algebra course. We will cover first five chapters and chapter 7 including the Review chapters in the text at minimum, but certain sections in the chapters may be skipped. Broadly speaking, the topics to be covered are: Basic concepts of algebra, Graphics, various Functions, System of equations, Inequalities, Sequences & Series, and Binomial theorem.

 

Homework, Quiz: For the list of the Homework [through MyMathLab], click next: http://www.coursecompass.com/ and follow the student instructions.  Basically, the problems for practice are every 4th problems in each section. (Those are #1,5,9,13,…). Please do at least a dozen of problems in each section.  After you complete the problems, self-check is required. Possibly 15-min quizzes or worksheets will replace with the homework collection. Homework solutions will be posted on the course web site. No late homework will be accepted unless arranged with the instructor in advance.  

 

Grading: The course grade is based on the followings: 

Homework & assignments - 20%, Two tests (in class) - 25% each, Final Exam - 30%.

 

Exams: There will be two midterm tests and a comprehensive final examination.  Final Exam is scheduled to be the last day of the Summer Session II.  No makeup tests or quizzes will be given except for documented medical reasons or prior permission from the instructor.

1.       Quiz #5 is schedule to be Mon. Jun. 29. It covers Sec. 5.1-5.3.

2.       Homework: Chap. 4 Test (p431) all problems. Due is Mon. Jun 29.

3.       Review thoroughly Test 2 and Bonus Quiz.

4.       Final Exam is scheduled to be Thu. Jul. 2 in class.

-          Detail announcement will be given coming Mon. Jun 29.

-          2-hour comprehensive test. No calculator allowed.

5.       Be sure to follow the homework schedule in the MyMathLab.

6.       Practice Sec. 5.1-5.3, especially Gaussian Elimination .

 

IV. Tips for Successful Completion

 

(1)     DON’T’ BE ABSENT – attending every class makes a BIG difference! Classroom is also cool! 

(2)     Make every Friday/Saturday College Algebra day!

(3)     Practice problems and the homework assignments everyday.

(4)     DO NOT TAKE A BREAK until you finish at least 15 problems in each section.  Be sure to do self-check. If you make wrong answers, keep correcting until you get right answers.

(5)     If you need tutoring, visit MATH Clinic in the CDC 701 (Building #7, Room 701).
