Intermediate Mathematics Courses (200 and 300 Level)Which Courses Do I Have to Take?Which courses you take at the intermediate level depend largely upon the requirements of your major.
What Courses Should I Take?Students who plan to take any 400-level mathematics courses other than Math 429/430 would be well-advised to take all three of Math 251, Math 283 and one of Math 253 or 265. This certainly includes all Mathematics and many Physics majors. Although it is not required, Mathematics majors should take MAT 271 if possible. MAT 351 and 314 are also likely to be of interest. Students who plan to take Math 429-430 are required to take Math 283, but would certainly profit from taking one of the linear algebra courses (Math 253 or 265), as concepts from linear algebra underly much of the theory of differential equations. What are the Prerequisites for the Courses I Need?Math 253, 265, 271 and 283 have Math 182 as a prerequisite, while Math 251 has Math 182 as a co-requisite. Math 265 also requires one of the introductory programming courses, CSC 117 or CSC 135. Math 213 and 214 each require MAT 123. MAT 313 has a prerequisite of MAT 181 and MAT 213, or MAT 182. MAT 314 requires either MAT 313 or MAT 253. |
