CS 115 - Grading Criteria for

Spring 2010 Semester Homework Assignments

Homework assignments are graded according to the following criteria:

(Note: this list is NOT all-inclusive; other criteria may be applied depending upon the assignment.)

For all homework assignments:

        •   Missing personal information on material turned in   -2 points.

For all homework assignments (except assignments #1 and #3):

        •   Spelling errors   -2 to -4 points.
        •   General formatting errors   -2 points.
        •   Minor overall grammar errors   -2 points.
        •   Major overall grammar errors   -4 points.
        •   Missing or incorrect required item -2 points
                for each missing or incorrect item.

Additional criteria for Word Processing assignments:

        •   Document length wrong (too long or short)   -2 to -10 points.
        •   Missing image (drawing or water mark)   -4 points
                for each missing item.
        •   Incorrect image formatting (drawing or water mark)   -2 points.

Additional criteria for Spreadsheet assignments:

        •   Missing worksheet or formula printout   -4 points
                for each missing item.
        •   Single worksheet value errors (original data or calculated)   -1 point
                for each error .
        •   Multiple worksheet value errors in the same row or column   -3 points
                for each row or column.
        •   General formatting errors   -1 to -3 points per worksheet.

Additional criteria for PowerPoint Presentation assignments:

        •   Missing required slide   -4 points
                for each missing slide.
        •   Too much text coverage on slide   -2 points per slide.
        •   Inadequate text coverage on slide   -2 points per slide.
        •   Wrong or extra slide in presentation   -2 points per slide.

Additional criteria for HTML (web page creation) assignments:

        •   IMPORTANT: Your web page cannot be graded if it cannot be
            accessed over the Internet!!!
        •   Invalid link on page   -2 points per bad link.
        •   Missing or incorrect required formatting element
            (blank lines, horizontal bar, etc.)   -2 points.
        •   Missing or incorrect required formatting element
            (title, heading, creation/last edited date, etc.)   -2 points.
        •   Missing required image   -4 points.
        •   Using invalid web page creation software   -20 points.


Explanations / Definitions

Missing Personal Information

All homework assignments should contain the following information unless otherwise indicated by individual assignment requirements: Student's Full Name, class and section number, due date, and assignment number.

Spelling Errors

One or more spelling errors in the entire document. Spelling errors include both truely misspelled words and words that are correctly spelled but context shows are actually misspelled.

General Formatting Errors

Any formatting error covering the entire document or a specific portion of a document. Includes incorrect values for the following: margin settings, tabs, paragraph indents, fonts, borders, etc.

Minor Grammar Errors

Examples of grammar errors considered to be minor in scope: missing or extra word in a sentence, single incomplete sentence, single short paragraph (less than three sentences in length), and similar events.

Major Grammar Errors

Examples of grammar errors considered to be major in scope: incomplete sentences (significant portion of sentence missing), run-on sentence(s), multiple short paragraphs, random or wandering presentation of subject matter, multiple subjects introduced in a single paragraph that is not an introductory presentation, and similar events.
