TEST #3 DATE REMINDER 11-15-2009

As announced earlier (see below) and in class last week, test #3 will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 18, for section 4 and Thursday, Nov. 19, for sections 5 & 6.

Test #3 will cover chapters 3 & 8 and the extra material on word processing.

We will cover chapter 9, Networks and Communications, next after test #3.

SPREADSHEET HOMEWORK DEMO 11-03-2009

The lecture and demo session covering the spreadsheet material and homework will be given on Wednesday, the 4th, and Thursday, the 5th, of November. This material WILL NOT be part of the third test but will be part of the final exam. I am covering this material now because you need time to do the spreadsheet assignments and if I wait until I finish the test 3 material you will not have time to do the assignments.

The study guide for chapter 8 will be finished by this weekend. Most of the material you need to know is in the book as the authors rewrote this chapter almost entirely since we last used the book and now cover almost everything you need to know. I do have a few items not in the book to cover but I can do all of this in one class session so you should read the chapter with the study guide before the lecture so you can ask questions about things you do not understand.

At this time I expect to finish this material and have test #3 two weeks from the fourth and fifth of November (this is the Wednesday and Thursday before Thanksgiving Break).

VARIOUS CHANGES 10-27-2009

The study guides for chapter 3, word processing and spreadsheets are now available. The study guide for chapters 8, 9 and 11 will be made available within the next week. We will be covering chapter 3 first followed by chapter 8 and the word processing material.

I have altered the due dates for homework assignments 9 and 10. The only assignments due next week are homeworks 7 and 8.

I will have the syllabus updated for the remainder of the semester sometime in the next week. As it now stands we will have test #3 sometime before the Thanksgiving break. The final exam will be in two parts: Part 1 will consist of regular hour test #4 - Part 2 will be comprehensive and will cover material from the first three hour tests. More details on this later.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to read the previous news message below.

WHAT IS COMING NEXT 10-24-2009

I will be doing the demos for homework assignments 7 & 8 on monday and tuesday. Both assignments will be due on the date originally scheduled for assignment 8. Reminder: as I have indicated before I will not hold you to the scheduled due date until I have done the required demo. The last demo will be for the spreadsheet assignments and I plan on doing that in about two weeks from now.

The next section of the course will consist of chapters 3 (Application Software) and 8 (Operating System Software) and the extra material on word processing software.

I will update the syllabus later this week when I have the time available. Right now I am completely occupied with the homework and test grading. I hope to have an updated grades spreadsheet available also but that may have to wait until later in the week.

SYLLABUS UPDATES AND CHANGES 10-11-2009

I have updated the syllabus for this portion of the course for all sections. It now reflects the correct dates for homeworks 5 & 6 and Exam #2.

I have temporarily removed the remainder of the syllabus until I can readjust the schedule and determine what we can realistically cover in the remaining weeks. We WILL have an exam #3 before the last week of the semester.

As announced several times in class last week the due date for assignment #5 has been changed. It will now be due on the same date as assignment #6. The homework assignments main page and the syllabus have been updated to reflect this change.

I have also altered the due date for assignment #7 and this change is reflected on the main homework assignments page.

VARIOUS UPDATES 10-04-2009

The study guides for chapters 6 (Output) and 7 (Storage) are now available. All study guides for test #2 are now complete and available on this web site.

I have not updated the syllabus yet. It is a more complex problem to get it updated than I originally envisioned. It will be updated as soon as I resolve a few issues I did not anticipate.

As it now stands, I plan on spending the week of the 5th on chapter 7, and one day each on chapters 5 and 6 the week of the 12th. I'll announce the date for test #2 when I am sure what date we can meet. As announced earlier, the majority of the test (about 70%) will cover material from chapters 4 and 7 with the remainder (about 30%) from chapters 5 anf 6.

As announced several times in class last week the due date for assignment #5 has been changed. It will now be due on the same date as assignment #6. The homework assignments main page has been updated to reflect this change.

NEW STUDY GUIDES AVAILABLE 09-21-2009

The study guides for chapters 4 (Inside The System Unit) and 5 (Input) are now available. The study guides for chapters 6 and 7 will be finished and available sometime next week.

I have not updated the syllabus yet but will do so as soon as possible. I plan on spending at least two class days on chapter 4, two class days on chapter 7, and one day each on chapters 5 and 6. At this time we are looking at test #2 sometime in mid-October. The majority of the test (about 70%) will cover material from chapters 4 and 7 with the remainder (about 30%) from chapters 5 anf 6.

Thus far I have read chapters 4 and 5 closely and, with certain exceptions, clarifications and additions, I can safely say that the book material covers most of what you need to know. Therefore I will spend most of the class time on those things the authors did not do or explain correctly or adequately.

SYLLABUS CHANGES AND REMINDER 09-13-2009

FOR SECTION 4 (MW 2:30 pm) ONLY: As announced in class the date foe test #1 has been moved back ONE class day. You will take it on Wednesday, September 16. Homework #3's due date is also moved back one class day to Monday, September 25. The syllabus has NOT been changed to reflect this.

FOR ALL SECTIONS : Test #1 covers chapters 1 & 2 and the extra material on e-mail. The HTML material will NOT be on the test.

We will be covering chapters 4, 5, 6 & 7 in the next part of the course starting with chapter 4. I will have the study guides and syllabus updated when I finish editing the appropriate materials.

HOMEWORK DUE DATES FIXED 08-30-2009

The due dates on the Homework Assignments main web page have been corrected. They now match the dates as shown on the syllabus pages for all my sections of CS 115.

IMPORTANT GENERAL INFO 08-24-2009

1) You must have a personal student account to use the PC computers in the UNLV public labs and classrooms. The guest accounts are set for specific classrooms and are active for the first two weeks of the semester only.

Incoming freshman students should have had their accounts assigned to them during orientation (It is the same user name and password as your email account). If you do not have an account, you can get one at the Student Help Desk on the second floor of the Student Union. It is free but you will need to provide a photo ID and proof of enrollment to get the account.

2) Printing is no longer free in the classrooms. You will be charged the same rate for printing in the classrooms and the public labs. That rate is now 3 cents per page for black and white prints and 40 cents per page for color.

3) Due to the use of a new textbook this semester I am reorganizing and redesigning this course. One major result of this work is that the syllabus is, and will remain, a "work in progress" during the semester. You can expect many changes to it during the semester. As it stands now everything in section 1 is fixed except the date of the first exam, which may change based on how the first weeks of the semester progress.
