Name: Jim Matovina
Biography:
Jim has a BS in Math Education from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and an MS in Mathematics with a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Statistics from Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Indiana. He has been teaching full-time at CSN since the Fall of 1996, serves as the CSN Math Department webmaster, and has been teaching online math courses since 1998.

Course Information
Number/Title: MATH 091, Basics of Mathematics
Description:
A course in the fundamental operations of arithmetic. Topics include fractions, decimals, percent, ratio and proportion, measurement, geometry, and statistics.
Method of
Instruction:
Students will be expected to read the text and Course Notes, do the suggested homework problems, and study the indicated web site materials. Students will also be expected to ask questions and initiate communications with the instructor, as needed.
Location(s):
Internet only, using CSN's Virtual College (Blackboard). Students are required to have Internet access. Once the semester begins, you will go to http://vconline.csn.edu and log into the Virtual College by following the instructions available on that page.

Grading
Homework:
A list of suggested homework assignments is provided in the Course Schedule. These assignments are there for your benefit. No textbook assignment will be submitted for grading.
Syllabus
Quiz:
You will begin the course by taking a quiz over the information and policies laid out in the syllabus. Although the score on the Syllabus Quiz will not count toward your overall course grade, you MUST get a perfect score on it before any of the remaining quizzes in the course will be made available to you.
Graded
Quizzes:
There will be sixteen 10-point online quizzes. Quiz completion deadlines are listed in the Course Schedule. At the end of the semester, the lowest quiz score will be dropped, and the remaining fifteen quiz scores will be added together to compute the Quiz Total (QT), which will be used in your course grade computation.
Final :
A cumulative, online, 50-point Final Exam must be completed on or before the deadline listed in the Course Schedule.
Extra Credit:
Absolutely no extra credit work will be offered in this course.
