Name: Jim Matovina
Biography:
Jim has a BS in Math Education from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and an MS in Mathematics with a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Statistics from Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Indiana. He has been teaching full-time at CSN since the Fall of 1996, serves as the CSN Math Department webmaster, and has been teaching online math courses since 1998.

Course Information
Title: MATH 097, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra
Description:
Topics include fundamental operations of real numbers, solving of first-degree equations, polynomials, exponents, applications, functions and graphs, systems of linear equations, linear equations and inequalities, radicals, absolute value equations and inequalities, and quadratic equations. Prerequisite: Placement Test or MATH 093 or equivalent.
Method of
Instruction:
Students will be expected to read the text and Course Notes, do the suggested homework problems, and study the indicated web site materials. Students will also be expected to ask questions and initiate communications with the instructor, as needed. 
Location(s):
Internet only, using CSN's Virtual College (Blackboard). Students are required to have Internet access. Once the semester begins, you will go to http://vconline.csn.edu and log into the Virtual College by following the instructions available on that page.

Grading
Homework:
A list of suggested homework assignments is provided in the Course Schedule. These assignments are there for your benefit. No textbook assignment will be submitted for grading.
Syllabus
Quiz:
You will begin the course by taking a quiz over the information and policies laid out in the syllabus. Although the score on the Syllabus Quiz will not count toward your overall course grade, you MUST get a perfect score on it before any of the remaining quizzes in the course will be made available to you.
Quizzes:
There will be twenty-one, 10-point online Quizzes (numbered Q1-Q21) to be completed by the deadlines listed in the Course Schedule. At the end of the semester, the lowest Quiz score will be dropped, and the ten remaining Quiz scores will be added together, and this Quiz Total (QT) will be included in the course grade calculation.
Midterm
Exams:
There will be two, 100-point midterm Exams (E1 & E2) during the semester. The Exams will be completed online, and must be done by the deadlines listed in the Course Schedule. At the end of the semester, each of these Exams (E1 & E2) will be included in the course grade calculation.
Final Exam:
There will be comprehensive 100-point Final Exam (FIN) given at the end of the semester. The Final Exam will be completed online, and must be done by the deadline listed in the Course Schedule. At the end of the semester, the Final Exam (FIN) will be included in the course grade calculation.
