2009 K-12 Statistics Poster Competition
This is the sixth competition sponsored by the Nevada Chapter of the American Statistical Association (NV-ASA). Teachers from schools throughout Nevada, who teach data analysis and statistics, engaged their students in this learning experience. The poster competition provides an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate mathematical understanding via their imagination and personal interest. In addition, student participants must use all of the mathematical processes - problem solving, reasoning, making connections, and communicating - to share a product that is clear, concise and purposeful.
In 2009, 461 students from 21 schools participated, creating a competition record 340 posters. Teachers and NV-ASA members judged the posters against a pre-defined rubric in each of four grade categories: K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. The judging was held on March 7th at Jay Jeffers Elementary School in Las Vegas. Prizes were awarded in the amounts of $72 for first place, $48 for second place, and $24 for third place. All winners received certificates of achievement and plaques were awarded to the schools of the first place students.
The winning posters were submitted to ASA's national poster competition. The First Grade Class of Julie Bernt from Eileen Conners Elementary School in Las Vegas earned an honorable mention for their poster Red, Yellow, Green ... What Colors are Our Jellybeans? Saju Varghese, a 12th-grade student at Advanced Technologies Academy in Las Vegas also earned honorable mention for his poster Global Warning. Mrs. Bernt's class and Mr. Varghese were recognized in the August 2009 issue of AMSTAT NEWS.
Congratulations to our Nevada winners!
