Math 95: Elementary Algebra, Distance Education

Fall 2008 Session - Instructed by Christina Hughes Roldan

This section of Elementary Algebra is taught using a WebCt website and a series of video lectures prepared by Professor Roldan. Students communicate with Professor Roldan throughout the semester via WebCT website mail, chatroom, discussion board, and/or visits to her office. Students are expected to have access to the Internet in order to complete weekly assignments and obtain course information.

All quizzes in this course are taken online. Three exams (two midterms and a final) are taken on-campus at a testing center.

The video lectures for the course are optional, but encouraged, as they take the place of traditional classroom lectures. The video lectures may be viewed via vidoetapes or online. VIDEOTAPE FORMAT: Copies of the videos may be obtained from the distance education office, call 651-5619, or your CSN rural site coordinator. The videotapes may also be viewed at any of the CSN campus libraries. ONLINE FORMAT: To view the videos online, go to the following list of links.

If you are a student enrolled in this course, please do the following:

Step 1: Read and print out the Fall 2008 syllabus.

Step 2: Purchase our class textbook, Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, 4th Edition, by Lial, Hornsby & McGinnis. You may purchase the textbook from any CSN campus bookstore or online at http://www.efollett.com/. Review prerequisite material by reading over the material in chapter 1 of our text.

Step 3: If you've not yet taken a distance education course that utilizes WebCT, then you will want to familiarize yourself with this program by attending one of the free WebCT Training Workshops: http://www.csn.edu/pages/264.asp. If you are new to WebCT, you are strongly encouraged to attend one of these sessions. Learning math is difficult enough without having to also figure out the computer stuff on your own! Note, our course uses the WebCT 6.0 format.

Step 4: Logon to the class website. You will be able to access our course once classes begin on Monday, August 25, 2008.

Step 5: If any of the above instructions are not clear, or if you have any other questions about the course, please contact tina.roldan@csn.edu .
