Each person will be required to post a review of two readings during the course: (a) one required reading posted to the main WebCT Bulletin Board; (b) one reading related to the use of the Internet in education posted to your small group forum.
(a) Required Reading Review: There will be a sign-up for this class. The due date of your particular reading is listed next to the title. Since the readings are staggered throughout the semester, you are to post your review by the day it is due. Please record the date that your reading is to be posted. Points will be deducted for early or late postings. (It's fine for your post to be any where from several days before the due date right up until the actual date.)
Your critique should include a discussion of key points made and comments on the usefulness/relevance of the ideas discussed. (You can assume that others have read the content.) It should be more than one screen in length and probably not be much longer than two or three screens. Screen sizes and font sizes vary, so it's hard to prescribe the exact length of the review, but it is hoped that the online discussions will be interesting and helpful. To make it so, avoid trying "to cover" the whole reading like in a term paper. Rather, focus on a few specific ideas that you think will be interesting and relevant to others in the class. Be sure to express your opinions on the usefulness and relevance of the ideas--don't' just summarize the article. Your goal is to raise some points and involve others in the discussion.
Assigned readings should be posted in the appropriate forum set up for that reading. (50 points).
(b). Outside Reading: You will also be expected to review one article from an outside source and post it to your smaller discussion forum. It should be from an educational journal or other academic source found in the library or online and should address issues related to teaching and learning with the Internet. For these, you should not assume that others have read the article. You should begin with a full bibliographic listing for the article and then, as above, discuss a few key points raised. If you found your article online, you should include the full URL. (Note: If you include the entire URL beginning with http:, WebCT and other email program will create an active link to the location. If you omit the http, this feature will not work).
To identify this reading review, title your posting, Outside Reading Review. The instructor will be included in each discussion group. (50 points).
Evaluation of Reading Assignment:
You will receive written feedback via WebCT private mail for each of your reading reviews. Your reviews will be graded on a rubric based on the following:
Content: (40 points)
-- key points made (accurate reference to specific ideas raised in the reading; thoughtful selection of key ideas);
-- comments on the usefulness/relevance of the ideas discussed;
-- appropriate detail (for graduate level discussion);
-- effort to stimulate class discussion;
Logistics (10 points)
-- including the appropriate title for your message;
-- posting your review by the due date.
-- posting your review to the proper forum (i.e., assigned
readings posted to the forum specified for your reading; Outside
readings posted to your small group forum)
